Movie reviews because what else can I do at Abu Dhabi Airport

I must say, Etihad Airways has a really nice collection of films and since I was stuck in that godawful machine right next to the king of snorring himself for twelve hours I had all the time in the world. And really buying a ticket for a flight to Tokyo isn't that much more expensive than going to the cinema. xD

At first I tried to watch "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (the original version) but after the first shot to that office party I was on the verge of crying so I moved on to the following.

Cowboys and Aliens is basically about cowboys (Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford mainly and that really cute doctor guy whose name I couldn't read because the screen had barely more pixels than a game of Pong) hunting down aliens (curtesy of the CGI department xD).
Well it is a bit more complex: Jake (Craig) wakes up in the middle of the desert with no idea who he is or how he came into posession of this shiny, alien looking (haha, look I made a pun!) bracelet. He goes into the next tiny city, gets in some trouble because he is apparently a murdered and thief but behold the aliens come to the rescue or at least to wack havock. Jake's bracelet proves not only to be very fashionable but also very useful in battle so the gang of Mr. Ford decides to forget that he stole money from them and together they go merry alien chasing.
Oh and there is woman, called Ella who is uhm... at first a nuisance, then meh, then understandably attracted to Mister Craig's nacked body (seriously. I want like... an adult movie with him. Full front porn please. Of the gay varierty or the hetero variety or even just himself masturbating or something) and then yeah she gets pretty cool.
Hmm, what to say about this film... It is entertaining that's for sure. The premise of clashing ye olde Western movie style with the sleek CGI alien ship works very well and yeah why not, aliens sure won't be picky about the when if it caters to their tastes. The costume department really outdid itself, everything looks the part and oh my God don't get me started on Mister Craig in this almost skintight trousers, this dirty white shirt and this marvellously tailored vest and this hat of his and of course with that old gun and ohh....
Where was I? Right.
So yeah, the movie surely looks good and it is a great deal of fun to watch the grumpy old men being grumpy and doing grumpy cowboy stuff - although I sometimes had trouble understanding their mumbling but oh well that's what dubbing is for. xD
So yeah, it had great actors and an interesting new idea but hmm... it wasn't that very well executed imho. Don't get me wrong the shots of amazing landscape and stuff were gripping and great but the whole movie just lacked in the story department. Everything that happened you saw coming for miles and miles in advance and although the actors put a great deal of effort in their characters, it was almost butchered by the super old clichés they dug out (the bonding-with-the-Apaches-because-Harrison-Ford-has-such-a-good-heart-and-the-leader-sees-this-of-course-part was really urgh and drawn out and some more urgh. But yeah I got a halfnaked Daniel Craig who must be the only cowboy in the whole of the Wild Wild West who shaves his chest).
It was kinda sad because I really wanted to like that movie but the boring story (there were almost no jokes in it which is nerve a good sign) and the lack of any serious female character (I'm not talking about that kiss she gave Craig in the worst possible moment I'd have done just the same and it was actually a quite funny scene xD) sort of destroyed it for me. Schade!

The next one was this and this is really a horrible poster for the film was quite nice actually!

I really had a lot of time and because I couldn't sleep I went for the Indian section of the plane's movie collection and chose this funny little thing.
"Mere Brother Ki Dulhan" is about two brothers who live far away from india (in London ). As we are in Bollywood-universe both are young, rich and super successful in their jobs and have the perfect looks too. Why of course. Luv, the older brother, asks his brother Kush to find him a suitable wife (it's better than it sounds believe me xD) to settle down with preferrable from India. Kush returns home and comes up with mutual college aquaintance from some years ago who agrees to marry Luv but she of course falls in love with Kush and everything becomes a fastpaced funny romcom from there onwards, cheesy dance scenes included.
The reason I avoid using that aquantaince's actual name is ... well it's Dimple. The woman is called "Dimple Dixit" - mixed with an Idian accent that becomes "Dimple Dick-shit". I know it's not funny but oh my God I nearly died in my seat. XDD
All in all it was a great funny way to kill some time and I was suprised how modern, bright and thoughtful the whole script was. Of course the main focus lay on the couple action but there were some nice and thoughtful dialogues. In one scene Dimple says she is tired that because of her outgoing, super happy personality all the boys think her easy and cheap and she hates having to defend herself for her attitude. Kush then explains her that she will meet plenty of those guys especially in India but when she asks him if she should change he says "No!" very distinctively.
I think that pretty deep and nice for a Bollywood movie. :D Oh and Dimple has a handicapped brother too (some unspecified mental disease) and his parents introduce him the first time as "and this is our genius son" which I somehow really liked.
There are the typical "commercial" shots as I like to call them, where Dimple turns around with her mouth half opened, hair flowing delicately in the wind a woeful look in her eyes - everything in slow motion of course - but they are not as frequent and as annoying as in other movies (and the funny thing is, Kush gets them too which is awkward and awesome at the same time XD) but also very exciting dancing scenes (with almost no traditional costumes at all) and some absolutely random shit like when Kush refuses to run away with Dimple she just drugs him and kidnapps him in a wheelchair and on various dangerous looking means of transportations. Some scenes are also quite touching for example when Kush's childhood friend presses him to confess to Dimple because he can't bear to see him so devastated and Kush just flungs himself into his arms and EVERYTHING IS SUPERSHINY AND SWEET!
Of course there is a happy ending but since the character are all very likeable you really want there to be one. <3 The only thing that really bugged me was that the pacing felt iike a Disney movie: they fall deeply in love over the course of just three days (granted, they knew each other before but still xD).
The movie is quite good and enjoyable (and only two hours long which is a tv-spot's length in Bollywood cinema XD) and I really must admit that I like the language. It's so powerful and sharp and has all those lovely sounds in it and ohhh I really want to cuddle everyone in this movie.
And Daniel Craig. XD

Oh thank you so much for everything you said about Cowboys and Aliens!
I was so very, very exited to see this movie because: Cowboys. Aliens. Grumpy old men. GRUMPY OLD MEN. - Awesome idea, I kinda liked the "Why the hell are aliens here?" and it looked great but I left the cinema with a clear "Meh..."
I still feel (but am not entirely sure) it would have been a lot better if she hadn't been an alien, just a human girl with her own rescue mission and if they would have had to figure things out themselves (okay, I have no idea how they would have done that and it would have become a lot slower movie I suppose, but I think not having a real explanation could have worked, too...)
Well, that was the aspect of the not really a-plot that bothered me the most, but probably better story writing of any variety would have helped a lot.
But it was kind of fun nevertheless.
(And I'm not sure the Doctor even had a name... Oh well, IMDb lists Sam Rockwell as "Doc".)

Anyway, till today I only heard "Oh what a shitty movie, I hate it, it's stupid" or "OMG the best movie evarrrrr!", so thank you. ;)

Haha, no need to thank me I think we have pretty much the same opinion about this movie which is kinda sad. XD

OMG the best movie evarrrrr!
WAT o.o Have these people seen any other actual movies? Like... I don't know... Harry Potter 7 even, I don't know... Jeeez.
