Thanks in advance for your attention, I am really quite lost and I need to get this done till Wednesday and it is quite important because my prof is a bitch and I don't want to get on his bad side.
So I have this excerpt from "Umi no shigeki" by Akira Yoshimura and I have to translate some sentences to find out whether he wrote a novel (a historical one that is) or a historiographic account of events.
Yeah it's that stupid.
Anyway, the translation went really well (and it broadened my horizon on war-related vocabulary because I really needed to know what "Generalstab" means in Japanese -..-) but there are some sentences I don't quite understand and if anyone could help me I would be really really grateful!
The excerpt:
"第一線 に は 危険 が 多い。十分 注意して いくように。。。 。 身 の 安全 を 心 から 祈っている" と、手 を さし出し、慈愛 のこもった 眼 で 参謀たちの 顔 を 見たら。
こまた は、 その 情景 に 眼 を いからせた。たしかに のり は 心 の 優しい 将軍 に ちがいなかった。
かれ は 部下 が 第一線視察 に 出発する こと を 気づ かって 握手している。
My translation which is far from good but I just have to get the meaning across (and it will even sound more awkward because I translate that from my already written German translation xD):
"The danger at the front of the battlefield is great. Be very careful when you go there. Pray with all your heart for your safety.", he said, extended both his hands (???) and looked with affection into the faces of his staff officers.
Komata [the protagonist] got angry as he saw this spectacle. Surely, Mori (the general talking at the beginning) was as good as the Shogun when it came to kindness of the heart."
And now there is the sentences that confuddles me.
"He was shaking hand at the departure of those subordiantes who were to inspect the forefront of battlefield..." (????)
What does 気づ かって mean? I can't find any translation for that, my dictionary even ignores the existence of this word. ;___;
Oh and if there are any other sentences you think I got completely wrong please feel free to correct them. =)
