Day One: Favourite lead female character
Sakura Kinomoto – Card Captor Sakura and Tsubasa Chronicles

Sakura Kinomoto is the most adorable, brave, honest, hard-working, daydreaming little girl (and later on princess) and she stays on top of my list for all time. She is beautiful, capable, a great friend, she has the most believable and honest relationship with Syaoran, she is a strong fighter, is not afraid (or very much able to conquer her fears) of anything, she would do anything for her family and tries her best at everything she does.
I love her with all my heart and I will do everything I can to ensure that my children will watch the series and read the manga as soon as they are old enough so they can grow up with one of the best female role models of all time (with impeccable fashion sense due to her best friend Tomoyo xD).
Day Two: Favourite supporting female character
Maggie – The Expendables 2

Some of you might remember me gushing about Maggie in my review to The Expendables 2 - and yes this is the perfect opportunity to gush even more about her perfection.
First of all: she has a big fucking gun and she knows how to use it. She is also very capable in hand-to-hand-combat and fights off a dozen goons all by herself.
Maggie is a brilliant decoder, she loves taking a risk and she is efficient and zealous in her ways – she even impresses Barney (“You got guts – no common sense but guts!”) with how she handles the safe situation.
She is the only female in a group of hardened warriors and handles herself with extraordinary elegance and just enough badassery not to take shit from the guys (especially Gunnar trying to flirt with her is trying on the patience but she never loses her calm and tells him off with the best glare in the entire history of modern cinema <33). Her relationship with Barney is also wonderful: she does NOT fall in love with him, but she flirts and makes him nervous whenever she is around and ensures that he calls her again if need be of her special skills (translate to: OH PLEASE LORD LET HER BE IN EXPENDABLES 3 PLEAAAAAASE).
Day Three: A female character you hated but grew to love
Stella Schönthal – Fortunas Flug
Hate might be too strong a word here. I never really hated Stella but she was just so incredibly different from Dejan’s cynical way of storytelling that I couldn’t relate to her very well at the beginning – especially since we already knew about all the things concerning the “Abteilung für Okkultes” and having to follow Stella’s steps at first kept us from learning more about it which angered me. She was a typical Mary Sue at the beginning or at least that’s what I thought. But over the course of the book she grew into a likeable, capable young woman, who conquers her fears and takes whatever she wants – but she stays true to her friends and doesn’t suddenly develop superpowers. I even liked her fainting and crying because it made for a well-rounded character. I still don’t really love her but I want to hear more about her – if I get some Dejan/Felix to satisfy my reptile brain needs.
Day Four: A female character you relate to
Ami Mizuno - Sailor Moon

Yeah I know it is quite a stretch to relate to super genius Ami Mizuno who not only scores the highest of the highest on her tests and spends all her time studying but also defends the world against the dark forces of evil while staying a great companion to all her friends.
Still, especially when I was younger and a lot shyer I could relate well to her attitude: I too would prefer books over social contact and for a long time I was so invested in studying and reading that I too felt alienated from my peers and actually aspired to be as intelligent as Ami (or Gretchen from Disney’s Great Recess which was a ridiculous notion xD). Like Ami, I almost never engaged in the fights my friends had and watched them fight over boys or teachers or bands or whatever tickled their fancies with much the same long-suffering expression (admittedly, I was quite the drama queen). Moreover, I never had much interest in boys (what little I had I feigned in order to impress my friends ;D) and found it inspiring to watch Amy get along with all her friends without dwelling on the whole boyfriend-stuff at all. It was... refreshing, so to say. =) I am infinitely curios as to what the new anime adaption of Sailor Moon will give us in regard of my favourite Inner Senshi girl. <3
Day Five: Favourite female character on a male-driven show
Elisa Maza – Disney’s Gargoyles

True, this is quite nostalgic and there are other strong female characters in “Gargoyles” but Elisa is one of the only “good” guys and she is the only woman in Goliath’s little gang of anachronistic stone friends.
Elisa is perfect in every aspect: she is a detective in the NYPD, hard working and incredibly sassy and a very capable hand-to-hand-combat fighter. When we first meet her, she is the only one brave enough to investigate the strange happenings surrounding the gargoyles’ first appearance and protects the citizens with her life.
She then proceeds to help Goliath and the Manhattan Clan to adjust to the modern world and even gives them a new purpose in life (one that does not imply to slay invading hordes of enemies as those are scarce in modern New York ) – to protect and serve the helpless.
Apart from her awesome work as a detective and gargoyle-sitter, she also has a well developed relationship with her family – her father being Native-American (apparently belonging to the Hopi tribe) and her mother being an African-American woman from Nigeria makes for a multiracial background for Elisa which greatly influences her behaviour towards the Gargoyles and other people.
Another amazing fact about her: she develops feelings for Goliath but that never distracts from the main storyline and she never is a damsel in distress. She acts on her feelings but only after she explores other relationship possibilities and decides for herself that Goliath is the best for her, initiating the first kiss between those too.
Elisa is such an awe-inspiring character and I am really grateful that I was still very impressionable during the time Gargoyles was aired in Germany because Elisa was such a wonderful role-model (and yeah maybe she is responsible for me developing a kink for broad-shouldered lads... XD).

Date: 2013-01-12 12:07 pm (UTC)I feel like a bad CLAMP fangirl because I never either read or watched CCS (though in my defense, I fell in love with CLAMP during my "emo teen" phase and CCS just didn't feature enough severed heads...). I did read TRC though I just never finished it.
Elisa though! I had such a huge little girl crush on her way back. And she managed to be that even though she was a human taking away screentime from the awesome monsters. And child!me really loved monsters (I liked Demona too, but Elisa was the actual star of the show). One of the best Disney characters ever, and not just one of their best female characters. She kicked butt. ♥
