(tbh though, while I like Jack/Stephen, so far, in the books, I'm not getting that "omg just JUMP each other" vibe I'm getting from Hornblower/Bush or certain other pieces of naval fiction I've read lately.

I just guessed it would get more intense with Jack/Stephen later -- because, well there's 20 BOOKS! --, SO DON'T TELL ME IT DOESN'T HAPPEN? D:)

And I know I stumbled accrross that x-over orgy fic way back when I didn't even know who half the characters were. SO CONFUSING!

Though to this day I have trouble imaging Horny and Bush going to an orgy. (even though Horny can be pretty depraved, I mean, Bush would die from jealousy. ;) )

Don't worry, I was being a drama queen xDDD (It's so much more fun when you can WALLOW IN PAIN XD) but I think that from now on I'll look on my favourite ship of all time with a weary eye because deep down I know that, although Diana might be pure poison for Stephen, Jack isn't the healthiest choice either, mostly because ~~Jack is sometimes too dumb to live~~ Stephen is in a lot of ways concerning the emotional a lot brighter than Jack and sees right through him - which gets boring for Stephen and unfair to Jack because he can't possibly compete with the manipulation Stephen could enforce on him (not that he does (much XD) but you get what I'm saying?) - of course, Jack is intelligent he is such a capable captain and a great astrologist later on but he also is a big stupid idiot when he has to deal with emotions other than "GREAT BIG JOY!". His whole relationship with Sophie is just... God, yeah he loves her but he is so terrible about it too, which is not even his fault entirely! He decided for himself that as a young, rebellious man he would enjoy everything life throws at him - and that gives him this sort of selfish character trait which leads him to a sort of happy-go-lucky-attitude towards life - and that is horrible for someone like Stephen who cherishes every relationship and doesn't open up that easily (making him the perfect spy xD.
Of course, Jack is generous in his love - I hope I'm not spoiling anything but he releases Sophie from their engagement when he lands in a sponging house with no way of paying his debts.
Of course this could be seen as a noble deed but I rather interpret it as Jack- seeing that there was no way of ever getting Sophie as his bride (at that moment, being in debt and all) and rather making sure that he could let go of his hopes for that ever happening and start anew - of course he pines for Sophie, of course he loves her but in the end, if the marriage never would have happened, Jack would have been sad for all of two weeks and then forgot all about her because he is so outgoing and bursting with energy, he simply wouldn't have time to be sad for a long time.
Now if I look at this approach to a relationship which is in Jack's book one of the more serious ones and project it onto whatever he would do with Stephen - it makes my heart kind of ache because as much as I love their bickering and their adventures and their hurt/comfort (TONS OF HURT AND COMFORT XD), this simply couldn't work out! On the one hand, Stephen could never fully commit to a relationship with Jack because of his fear of getting treated as just another notch on the bedpost and on the other hand Jack being the emotional simpleton that we all love couldn't give the doctor exactly what he needs because of his simpleness and his rather "Yeah, we are best friends, let's fuck, I'm sure it's super fun, now where is the next adventure?"- attitude.
I'm sure at least Jack would get a lot of happiness out of a romantic relationship but only because love comes easy to him and he doesn't put much thought into what he gives away.
But for Stephen? It would be a constant struggle of "Will he abandon me or not?" and although that makes for a great premise of pining and character depth and ultimate tortured soul - it breaks my heart that wherever Stephen is turning he just can't be happy! And that's terrible because he loves Jack so much and Jack loves him too and there is absolutely nothing either of them can do to make Stephen completely enjoy what he has AND THIS IS FREAKING HEART BREAKING Q_____Q

And now we have Hornblower in the picture, stupid sexy Hornblower who could make Stephen happy ( I can really see this work, Horny doesn’t commit himself any easier than Stephen after all) and I AM REALLY FREAKING OUT and crying XDDDDD

Without spoiling anything (hopefully): it gets more intense ^^ It takes its time and it’s a lot more subtle than say Bush getting a funny feeling in his breeches while watching wet Hornblower running around the deck naked (seriously, a Sylvester Stallone movie is more subtle than that!!!) but in the end it’s just as deep and satisfying a relationship as Bush/Hornblower, although I pretty much destroyed my own pairing with the paragraph above didn’t I? But Stephen is so in love with Jack and there is no way anyone can’t love Jack and his bubbly, funny, PUN-LOVING ADORABLENESS so you get as much invested into them as in Horny and his lieutenant. <333

tl; dr: I HAVE TOO MANY FEELS FOR FICTIONAL NAVAL OFFICERS AND DOCTORS AND DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH MY LITTLE DOCTOR, HORATIO, OR I’LL GNAW OF YOUR DIRTY HANDS!!!

Ugh, you make Jack/Stephen sound so dramatic and tragic (and unrequited, because Stephen would not risk having his heart broken by committing himself), but I can see that. I mean, just look at the way Diana can completely destroy Stephen with just a word or two, because he is so attached to her. It's not like Jack doesn't take his relationships to heart, but with Stephen they just run deeper.

I am not so sure about that. Horny does sleep around too. Long-term relationship wise though, yeah, he would prefer to persue partners whom he thinks he will be able to keep for a while, but the reality (at least in book canon ;) ) looks somewhat different. He isn't nearly as wise as Stephen in that regard, he only wishes he were. ;)

(You should write that fic though. Stephen crushing on Horny, because he doesn't dare risk Jack, while Horny is at first oblivious and then considers what a good companion Stephen might make. All the while Bush is sharpening a knife (or a duelling sword ;) ) to impale Stephen on while Jack is all "??? what is happening?" and has to bodily drag Stephen back to his ship. ;)

I wasn't sure anymore whether you had already read HMS Surprise or not so uhhh, no, he manages to stay out of prison after that (debtor's prison, that is xD). Okay, that helps mending my broken heart. I'm still in the middle of "Atropos" and Horny is having people dive for treasures while making racist comments. Adorable. AND I AM MISSING BUSH SO HARD IT'S CRAZY. Horny is being all cranky and snappy all the time, Bush needs to come around and give his captain a spanking to knock some sense into him >.<

I should indeed. To further the healing process, I'd turn it into a comedy with everyone running around and not talking to each other and silently planning their revenge (Bush and Jack could team up to spoil Horny's dates with Stephen, Stephen would totally guilt trip himself because deep down he only loves Jack but he is too afraid of getting hurt... man, this sounds like Jane Austen xD)

Ugh, Atropos must be my least favourite Hornblower because of that middle part (i. e. the main plot). Also, no Bush makes me sad. Luckily he is back for the next one -- which is actually the first and the most racist of them all (but not as racist as the movie based on it. Serious, Hollywood, brownface??). And also the one in which Hornblower has his biggest "wtf, you jerk!" moments, imo. :P But he also naked a lot of the time, so that is ok. And it has one of the best ever ship vs. ship actions I have ever read. ♥

OH MY GOD YES ALL OF THIS. It's so hearbreaking and Jack is so utterly helpless - I mean EVEN HE NOTICES that Stephen is digging his own grave with that and he is so cute when he tries to stop him...
In my head the whole book is basically this:
Jack: "Look, I know I banged her and all that, not cool, I know, but please for my sake don't go there she will drain you like a sparkly vampire and she will be standing over your cold dead body, laughing like a madwoman."
Stephen: "OUT OF MY WAY. I WILL SO GET INTO THOSE PETTICOATS!"
