Date: 2013-03-10 12:34 pm (UTC)Ugh, Atropos must be my least favourite Hornblower because of that middle part (i. e. the main plot). Also, no Bush makes me sad. Luckily he is back for the next one -- which is actually the first and the most racist of them all (but not as racist as the movie based on it. Serious, Hollywood, brownface??). And also the one in which Hornblower has his biggest "wtf, you jerk!" moments, imo. :P But he also naked a lot of the time, so that is ok. And it has one of the best ever ship vs. ship actions I have ever read. ♥

I loved the bits though in which Jack tried to protect Stephen from Diana's harmful influence and completely failed at it. d'awww. And then his worry when Stephen is wounded and he has to assist the operation and nearly faints, and has to sit down. Awww, babies!
YESYESYES THIS SOUNDS PERFECT!!!! Bush and Jack would make terrific cock-blockers. ;)
Also, well, O'Brian is a male Jane Austen, so it would only be fitting ...
(And Jack could totally keep himself in check (a bit) if only Stephen told him that's what he wanted)

OH MY GOD YES ALL OF THIS. It's so hearbreaking and Jack is so utterly helpless - I mean EVEN HE NOTICES that Stephen is digging his own grave with that and he is so cute when he tries to stop him...
In my head the whole book is basically this:
Jack: "Look, I know I banged her and all that, not cool, I know, but please for my sake don't go there she will drain you like a sparkly vampire and she will be standing over your cold dead body, laughing like a madwoman."
Stephen: "OUT OF MY WAY. I WILL SO GET INTO THOSE PETTICOATS!"
... I should write a parody to this. Not that these books need any more humor, but still.

Still sobbing but somehow the tragedy of the pairing and this bit here are speeding up the healing process. xDDDD I AM WAY TOO ROMANTIC FOR THESE NAVAL ADVENTURES SERIOUSLY!

Though I love how once it looks like Stephen and Diana have made up Jack is once again defending her honor. Aww, he's such a gentleman. *g*
Awww, but M&C is a romance. Just not a very happy one. D:
